(NEW) Universal by Design -- Spring 2008 -- A new course is being developed at the College of Design to be introduced in the spring semester of 2008 -- it will be an advanced undergraduate and graduate level course on universal design.
Freshmen Seminar
First year design students are exposed to issues impacting design for universal usability at many scales. They are also introduced to Center staff and facilities.
Sophomore simulation activity: Sight, Sound and Motion
Design students are sensitized to conditions that limit function and subsequent interaction with the environment through a half-day workshop simulating a variety of disabilities.

Lectures by staff
Center staff are regularly invited to give presentations about Center programs and services, the Principles of Universal Design and other universal design issues.
Studio review and critiques by staff and members of the community
Regular design critiques are scheduled throughout the semester in the various sophomore, junior, and senior design studios to evaluate student projects. These critiques are frequently attended by Center staff bringing a user-centered approach to concept development and refinement.
Courses taught by Center staff
Center staff have, in the past, taught junior and senior level Human-Centered Design Courses for industrial design students. In these classes, students receive more detailed information about how functional limitation impacts environmental interaction and the implications for design of these environments. Students outside the School of Design also participate in these courses as electives.
Independent study
Students with individual interest in universal design projects can work with Center staff to pursue educational, research and personal goals. Students may also choose from a large stock of project ideas generated at the Center through various input streams.Graduate Research Assistantships
Eligible students can qualify to work with the Center as Graduate Research Assistants, funding permitting.Work opportunities

As the School's Ph.D. Program begins, doctoral candidates with interest in universal design may use the unique facilities and resources at the Center to support research and broaden the scope of this growing field.
