Biography
Professor Fox specializes in the areas of applied landscape architecture, urban design, green infrastructure, and site construction. Fox is a registered landscape architect with 15 years of experience working on projects that range in scope from citywide transportation and urban design initiatives, to public parks and school sites, to small-scale design-build applications, to landscape architectural education. Fox’s work is most interested in public landscapes and is significantly influenced by public involvement. More specifically, he is interested in the development of sustainable landscapes and their resultant impacts on cognitive, social, and cultural behaviors. His teaching, research, and outreach efforts include the design, development and study of naturalized educational environments, integration of low impact development strategies and context sensitive solutions at all scales, and the art and craft of construction detailing and implementation.Fox’s recent activity includes the development of the NC State Design/Build Initiative (http://ncsudesignbuild.wordpress.com/). Developed in the summer of 2010 and delivered through the Department of Landscape Architecture, the program collaborates with NC State University Housing and numerous campus stakeholders to create environmentally progressive places on campus. The program and its projects have been presented across the United States and recognized with numerous awards, including a City of Raleigh Environmental Award for Institutional Innovation, a Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Community Appearance, and a Tri-State ASLA (GA, NC and SC Chapters) Merit Award. The latter is a peer-reviewed, international design and research publication developed for students, by students. The journal is managed through an open-format, web-based editorial interface (http://design-dev.ncsu.edu/openjournal/index.php/shift). The inaugural issue Shift: infrastructure Journal was received with great fanfare and was recognized with two prestigious student awards, including the 2011 ASLA Award of Excellence for Communications (http://www.asla.org/2011studentawards/174.html), and a 2011 Tri-State ASLA Honor Award (GA, NC and SC Chapters).
