Biography

Professor Gulling joined the faculty at North Carolina State University in 2012. Prior to joining NCSU, Prof. Gulling was at University of New Mexico and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). She has over 7 years of teaching experience and research in the area of building technology and design.

One of the things that sets Prof. Gulling apart from other designers is her belief that building technology can lead design instead of serving design. Building technology has led the design process in her research, creative work, and teaching innovations. By placing more emphasis on the making process in the beginning of design, architects can have great influence in the research of new materials, assemblies, fabrication methods, and building systems.

Her research is within this framework. She contends by working directly with manufacturers and fabricators, architects can offer innovative design solutions for buildings and building products. Through this approach architects can be more involved with all scales of design. In addition to designing overall buildings, architects could design our buildings’ products, materials, and systems. By expanding architects’ role beyond that of building designer, the profession may become more broad-based, able to respond to different design issues, and better prepared for research and development opportunities. She promotes that in today’s economic climate and as the future of the profession is questioned, broadening the role of the architect will strengthen the profession.
