Biography
David Hill has taught full-time at the College since 2007. While at NC State, David has led graduate and undergraduate design studios and digital media courses. He has also developed a graduate seminar on architectural prototypes.Prior to joining the Architecture Faculty, David worked for Hashim Sarkis Studios in Cambridge, Mass., and Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee Architecture (PBC+L) in Raleigh, N.C. His projects at PBC+L included academic buildings and bus shelters for Wake Technical Community College, signage for Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and classroom buildings on NC State’s campus. Hill has won various levels of AIA design awards and has also been recognized with awards in several design competitions, most notably his winning entry (with Prof. Laura Garofalo and Nelson Tang) in the “What if New York City…” International Design Competition. This disaster-relief housing proposal was also awarded an ACSA Faculty Design Award in 2009. More recently, David has contributed to award-winning design projects and competition entries at Tonic Design in Raleigh.
David taught studios at the Boston Architectural College, Harvard University Graduate School of Design’s Career Discovery Program, and several design studios as an adjunct professor at NC State before joining the faculty full-time. He has served on awards juries for AIA South Carolina and Georgia, as a guest juror at Carnegie Mellon University and UNC - Charlotte, and he recently participated in the Visiting Teacher Programme at the Architectural Association in London.
David is pursuing his interest in prototypes through a series of research and design projects. He has presented papers and design projects on post-disaster housing and architectural applications for textile composite panels at several ACSA conferences, and he has received grants to study the architect George Matsumoto and his post-WWII demonstration houses. Most recently, David was awarded an NC State Strategic Research Initiatives Grant with Civil Engineering Professors Joe DeCarolis and Ranji Ranjithan for a proposal titled: "Building Design Process Innovation for Enhancing Energy and Environmental Sustainability."
