Biography

Haig Khachatoorian, IDSA, has practiced internationally in the disciplines of architecture, exhibit, graphic, interior and product design as a consultant, educator and freelance designer. Professor Khachatoorian joined the College of Design faculty in 1987 and has served as associate dean for research and department chair.

Before NC State University, he was vice president/design director of Retail Planning Associates in Columbus, Ohio, and tenured associate professor at The Ohio State University. He previously served as a vice president of Nexus America and Dave Ellies Inc., and as principal of his own consulting practice, DESIGNET. In these professional capacities, Khachatoorian has consulted for a wide range of clients including Royal Trust, Bank of America, Ford, GTE, Barclays Bank, Canadair, Midway Airlines, Citibank, Dallas Arts District, Federal Express, Porsche Cars NA, Ross Labs, Storehouse, Amoco and the United States Information Agency.

Among other honors, he was awarded a Loeb fellowship at Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1985-86; received a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) grant in 1981; as well as Fulbright-Hays grants to Poland and Israel. He holds a U.S. Design Patent for an advanced flight simulator, developed in 1983 for SimuFlite. He has also received awards from IDSA, IBD, ISP and NRMA. For design research projects, he has received grants from Mitre, Philips, Ford Caterpillar, John Deere, Daimler Chrysler, GlaxoWellcome, Michelin and IBM corporations
