Biography
Marvin Malecha, FAIA is an architect, a professor of architecture and Dean of the College of Design at North Carolina State University. He has served in many national positions including as the 2009 National President of the American Institute of Architects and the 1989-1990 President of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. His work has received national recognition. Most notably these awards include the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for excellence in architectural education and the AIA North Carolina F. Carter Williams Gold Medal for Architecture. His efforts at the College of Design have included the establishment of a study center in Prague, a collaborative relationship with the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh emphasizing a vital grades 6 to12 education program, the initiation of a Ph.D. program in Design and the establishment of a broad ranging curriculum in Design Studies. As a teacher Malecha has taught a course on Design Thinking for the past fifteen years to unwrap the creative process for the beginning design student. He has written on the subject of design extensively from a children’s book to lessons on drawing to studies of the professional design office as it evolves toward a learning organization. He authored

Right of Inquiry, adapted as policy by the American Institute of Architecture Students. His study of the Ancient Greek Theater resulted in a monograph Form and Performance published by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He also co-authored, with Robert Greenstreet,
The Junior Faculty Handbook on Tenure and Promotion and the
New Administrators Handbook, both with the sponsorship of the ACSA. He has exhibited his drawings at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and as a University exhibition at the D.H. Hill Library of NC State University. He is scheduled in September 2013 to have a comprehensive show of his drawings at the Center for the Study of Mediterranean Architecture in Chania, Greece on the island of Crete. His most recently completed commission is as the Design Architect for the Chancellor’s residence on the NC State University campus. Marvin Malecha is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and a Distinguished Professor of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
